Leaving Clover for Shopify POS: contracts, hardware and a clean cutover
Read your Clover agreement before anything else, because many Clover setups come through a bank or reseller with their own contract terms. Items, customers and orders export as full CSV lists; inventory by location does not come across in the standard import, so plan a count on cutover day.
Start with the paperwork, not the data
Clover systems are often sold through a bank or a payments reseller rather than directly. That means your terms can include a processing agreement, an early-termination fee, or a hardware lease that runs for years. Find three documents before you plan anything:
- Your merchant processing agreement (look for the term, renewal and early-termination sections).
- Any equipment lease or financing agreement for the Clover devices.
- Your most recent monthly processing statement.
If an exit fee or lease balance is large, the right answer may be to switch when the term ends. We do this review in the free assessment.
What exports from Clover
Shopify's migration guide for Clover says:
- Items export to a CSV file, but only as a full item list (no partial export).
- Customers export as a full customer list.
- Orders export with filters and date ranges.
- Reviews can't be exported or migrated.
- Shopify's standard import doesn't import inventory by location, and Shopify doesn't support different prices by location.
For a multi-location store, that last point matters most: we import products once, then load each location's stock separately, then confirm it with a physical count on cutover night.
Hardware: what might carry over
Shopify's guide says some of your hardware might be compatible and points to its supported-hardware list. In practice, card readers for Shopify Payments come from Shopify's own range, while some receipt printers, barcode scanners and cash drawers may work. We check your exact models against the list before you buy anything.
A cutover that does not split your day
- Pick your slowest trading day.
- Stop selling on Clover at close; run your final Clover reports.
- Count stock that night, per location.
- Open on Shopify POS the next morning with staff trained the week before.
- Keep Clover reports for your records; cancel only after your final Clover payout lands.
When not to switch yet
If your Clover agreement has a large early-termination fee or a long lease balance, and Clover still does what you need, wait until the term ends. Switching to save a little on processing can cost more than it saves in the first year.
